French Bulldog Breeders in Ohio: French Bulldog Owner Review (Teena and her Frenchie Maisie)
In this review, I’d like to share some of the upsides and downsides of owning this wonderful breed – French Bulldogs.
Our Frenchie’s name is Maisie, and she is pretty much my dream dog. I wanted to have a dog ever since I was a young child, but we always had cats instead. Finally, when I started living on my own (with my husband), I could fulfill my dream. And – oh miracle! – my father-in-law gave us Maisie as a birthday gift for me. (I may or may not have mentioned that I have been dreaming of owning a Frenchie).
I have never really even interacted with a Frenchie before Maisie, but I read a lot about them and was pretty much in love. When Maisie came to our home, the first thing she did was start harassing our cat and trying to get him to play with her. Day after the day we got more and more used to her and she got more and more used to us and the cat got used to being harassed. (They are best friends now).
I’d like to start with the positive sides of owning a Frenchie. (There are lots!) Of course, to us, one of the best things about Frenchies is that they are such loving, affectionate dogs. Once they accepted you as their owner, they will always want to be by your side and love you forever.
This breed has a very short coat which makes it very easy to take care of and also eliminates constant cleaning. You don’t even have to wash the dog too often – just if they get into something really dirty.
Frenchies are very intelligent. Not that other breeds are not intelligent but Frenchies have their own type of smart. They seem to understand everything you say to them and even the things you don’t say, just by the expression of your face. They always know what you want from them and if they do something wrong they always understand it (even if they pretend not to).
Frenchies are the calmest, least aggressive breed out there. They are not aggressive to other dogs or people (unless they are attacked). They love cats and other animals too and love children!
There are many more upsides about owning a Frenchie. They are just very lovable dogs and will enrich your life with their very presence.
Of course, as with anything, there are some downsides too. Or, rather, some nuances about this breed that you should remember if you are thinking of getting this dog.
First of all, this is a tricky breed when it comes to their health. They do not do well in extreme weather. They don’t do well in the cold but also can’t tolerate the heat either. With a Frenchie, you always have to watch their environment and make sure they don’t overheat or get too cold.
Unfortunately, this breed, in general, is susceptible to diseases and health conditions. A lot of it is due to the shape of their head and face as well as their airways. Their joints are also not their strongest side. You have to watch them carefully when they are younger to prevent them from climbing stairs or falling until their joints become stronger.
Frenchies are also very often susceptible to allergies. Especially chicken often seems to be a problem and any food brand that contains chicken.
French Bulldogs are like vacuums – they vacuum up everything that is left on the floor or any surface they can reach. Because of that, they very often end up with food poisoning, because they love eating something they are not supposed to. Needless to say, it can end up being quite stressful for the owner, if not for the dog.
Our Frenchie Maisie is also a chewing machine. She chews up everything in sight no matter how much chew toys and bones she has.
One downside we experience with Maisie is her leash behavior. She keeps pulling the leash when we take her for walks – we thought she would outgrow it after her puppy age but that hasn’t really happened yet. We don’t really know how to deal with that so we just let her be.
Overall this is a great little dog and a very good family companion. She will be with you through thick and thin and will make even a dark day brighter. Would I suggest you get a Frenchie? Yes, definitely. As long as you have the time, finances and patience to take care of a dog. It’s like having a child – lots of responsibility but also a wonderful experience and it’s something that you will love forever.
