Before you adopt your puppy: Golden Retriever owner review
Our pup Sammy is almost 3 years old now so I can proudly say we have some experience with Golden Retrievers (Sammy is our first Golden). Here are a few things about Goldens in general and Sammy in particular.
These dogs have so much energy! They need to be able to expand that energy every day. We take him for walks at least twice a day and only leash him if we walk in town. But what he really loves is when we go to the woods or to the beach and we usually let him off leash there so that he can run around wild. (Which seems to be his natural state!) Goldens need some free run time so they can develop properly and also so they stay happy and exhausted. An exhausted Golden is a happy Golden is an easy Golden! 🙂 A bored Golden Retriever means chewed up slippers and knocked down flower pots. You’ll have to walk your Golden daily no matter the weather. This may not be a great dog for you if you live somewhere in the Northern hemisphere and if you don’t appreciate the smell of wet dog hair!
Feeding your Golden. If you thought that most of the expense will be to buy a Golden from a breeder, you are wrong. Most of the expense will be the food you will buy for them. Especially if your Golden ends up being allergic to a lot of food, like ours. For this reason, we only buy premium food and it’s not cheap! But it’s cheaper than taking Sammy to a vert or cleaning up his vomit (which happens when he eats things he is allergic to. Strangely never happens when he manages to gobble up some poop he found out on the beach before we could stop him. Speaking of which: eating poop may be an issue!). Allergy is quite common with Golden Retrievers, and is usually easily recognizable. If you see rash on your dog’s nose/eyes/ears or you see them itch too much, or vomit, it may be something in their food not agreeing with them. Allergy can be tricky in terms of managing but once you have figure out what exactly your dog is allergic to, it becomes much easier.
We also try to minimize treats to keep him from getting overweight and to teach him not to beg when we are at the table.
We also give Sammy vitamins to make sure he is getting everything he needs.
Grooming. You will do a lot of grooming! This just comes with owning a Golden Retriever. Prepare to buy a lot of brushes and prepare to be using them constantly. If you don’t, all of that hair will end up on your living room floor and that’s a lot of hair! Also, if you don’t brush your Golden regularly, their coat quality can really go down. Matted hair and hair clumps that are hard to brush out and that can only be cut out probably isn’t something you really want for your Golden Retriever. So brush! Brushing is also an excellent time to inspect your pup for ticks and dirt.
Personality. Golden Retriever personality is something special, of course. He loves everyone, most of all his family. But they are also very trusting towards complete strangers! If you need a guard dog or a serious dog that will only follow you and listen to you, a Golden is probably not your best option. They are so friendly with strangers it’s like they wouldn’t mind leaving you to follow a stranger to their home. We don’t have an issue with this (except of course, we don’t allow Sammy to walk away with anyone 🙂
One issue you may encounter with Goldens is they can be prone to separation anxiety and/or boredom when left alone. Which usually translates in being quite destructive! Your furniture, shoes, your phone charger, the leg of a chair – anything can (and likely will) be destroyed if you leave your Golden alone for a long time and if they aren’t used to it. When Sammy was little, this was a real problem for us. He’s mellowed out a lot since then and now he mostly sleeps when he is home alone. But the first few years can be tough!
But, the upside, of course, is the immeasurable love your Golden will give you daily. That alone is worth a lot of downsides. Sammy is definitely worth it for us, has been even in the roughest of days when he was still a silly pup. I guess they are so cute when they are little so that you don’t kill them for being little bastards 🙂
