Golden Retriever Owner review
Stephanie and her Golden Retriever Jenna
What can I tell you about my Golden Jenna? She’s five years old, and I think I know why Goldens are so popular. She is truly a gem of a dog. She is very friendly and affectionate, very intelligent and gentle with everyone. She’s very polite and a pleasure to have around. Of course, she wasn’t always this way you need to remember this as a future Golden owner. They do take work. Especially if you have a young puppy. You will have to put in lots of work training them and teaching them right from wrong before you can fully enjoy their company. It’s just like with human children, really.
But Golden’s don’t need very strict training. They are not German Shepherds! They respond really well to clicker training and lots of encouragement.
If you train your Golden right, they will be a wonderful dog to be around and will make you very proud. Jenna and I went to puppy courses and spent lots of time training. She now knows all the main commands such as “sit”, “down”, “fetch” and others. She also behaves really well on the leash, never pulls, her recall is amazing and she knows how to behave in stores and transport. Everyone we know mentions to us how nicely behaved she is and how nice it is to have her around when we visit.
I think Goldens are perfect dogs for families with kids. We don’t have kids of our own but we have nephews and Jenna adores them. She is very gentle with children.
One thing Golden Retrievers are not great for is guarding. They are not guard dogs. They have zero aggression and will not be good at protecting you or your house, and it would be a crime to make them more aggressive. This is simply not in their nature. So if you need a guard dog, you will be better off with a different breed.
Goldens are great at being companion dogs. It’s almost like they were made to make people happier, make them laugh and get them outside! All great qualities in my book.
