Golden Retriever Breeders in Indiana: Owner Review (Tyra and her Golden Maggie)

I have been thinking for a while about what I would like to tell potential owners about this breed. It is very important to understand that we are fully responsible for the animals we bring to our homes and sometimes taking care of an animal is not as easy as you expect. Even with such a wonderful breed as Golden Retrievers.

About ten years ago I worked as a Groomer’s assistant and someone brought a Golden Retriever for grooming before a competition. I was so impressed by that dog. It was such a wonderful pup that I felt like I fell in love with the breed right on the spot. His fur was silky, and his expressive eyes looked as if he was smiling at me. That was when a dream was born: I wanted to own a dog like this.

Back then I lived with my mom and it took a bit of convincing to buy a dog. I found a breeder not far from where we lived and my mom and I went to see the puppies. They were adorable, as you would expect, and we both fell in love. It was decided. We were getting a Golden.

Those first few days with Maggie were some of the happiest! I still feel the excitement and the love I felt for her when we first brought her home. It’s like a new baby, except maybe a bit more mobile. She was extremely friendly and outgoing and loved spending time with us, her family, and the neighbour’s kids.

But of course, there were some more difficult aspects to owning our Golden that I think people need to be aware of. First, she chewed up half the house while she was growing up. Even though she had a million toys and chew toys too, she still chewed up our furniture: desks, tables, sofas, as well as our shoes and even some clothes.

We didn’t have any problems potty training her. But walking on a leash was a problem. She would always pull, and she is quite strong so that wasn’t very pleasant. She was very excitable, especially when she was younger, so we always had to try and lure her in whatever we wanted her to do by using food and toys.

She is also a bit of a scaredy-cat. If she hears any noise or sound at night, she will start barking like crazy until everyone is up and then we have to calm her down.

She sheds a lot! No matter how much we brush her out, no matter how good her diet is (we have tried all the vitamins under the earth!). Needless to say we do daily cleaning just to keep the house from drowning in hair.

Don’t get me wrong. Golden Retrievers are wonderful pets and family companions. They can be sweet, very smart, extremely friendly and love their family. But there will always be issues, that can sometimes be very difficult to leave with and difficult to correct, in your Golden.

So you need to be ready for that before you make a decision to get a Golden (or any dog!). Goldens can be quite difficult when they are still young/ It’s basically like having a child. They require discipline and you will need to spend lots and lots of time with them before they grow up into a well-behaved dog (if you are lucky).

Another issue you may encounter is feeding. A lot of Golden Retrievers are allergic to a variety of foods. Ours seems to do fine on the premium wet food we chose but she cannot have anything off the table, or we are guaranteed a night with diarrhea and/or vomiting. Apart from the fact that it may not be easy to find a brand that your Golden will tolerate, it can also be quite expensive! Take that into account when you are planning on getting a dog.

Golden Retrievers are usually very friendly and Maggie is no exception. Sometimes she is even too friendly: w had a few times when she almost left us following a friendly stranger. We only hope that, had she really gone, she’d miss us and would come back eventually. But who knows! She is also very friendly with other animals, dogs and even cats. She has never chased a single cat in her life.

Our Maggie loves our whole family. My husband is definitely the main “authority” for her in our family, but our son is probably her favorite person. One time, our son tumbled off the sofa accidentally and got scared. He started crying and Maggie just sat there staring at him as we tried to console him. Then she started bringing her toys one by one and putting them by his feet.

It was very sweet. All in all she is a wonderful dog and is probably worth any inconvenience or difficulty we had to go through with her. But it’s still important to remember that owning a dog is not all butterflies and unicorns, even when it’s such a wonderful dog as Golden Retriever.
