The other thing that can be difficult for some people is separation anxiety. Archie really doesn’t like being left alone in the house. It was especially bad when he was a puppy. He would cry and howl for hours. We tried crating him because we have learned that crates can provide what feels like a safe place to a dog, where a dog can relax and not be afraid, and I think it worked a bit, but he still hated being left alone. Some dogs can get really destructive when left alone, too. If you are a busy professional and leave home for long stretches of time, and cannot take your dog with you, getting a Golden Retriever might not be the best idea. They are so people-oriented that they feel really abandoned and panic when they are left alone for long stretches of time.

At the time of writing this review, our Golden Retriever Archie is almost 14 months old. He is an amazing dog and we love him very much.

Archie is extremely friendly, probably the most affectionate dog I’ve known. He’s best friends with all our neighbors, their dogs and even their cats! He is also very intelligent and can be quite coy! When he wants something, he will find a way to get it no matter what you do or say. Sometimes it’s hilarious, and sometimes it’s a bit of a pain in the but, but we are used to it and we love him anyway. He’s just stubborn and knows what he wants, that’s all.

Archie is a very active dog. We knew Golden Retrievers are active and energetic, but we couldn’t imagine just how much energy they actually have. He needs daily walks, and active walks! He has lots of pent-up energy otherwise and will become even more mischievous than he usually is if we don’t provide him lots and lots of active time outside.

Like all Golden Retrievers, our Golden is very people-oriented. We can even take him on walks without a leash now and he will keep near us and even if he gets too excited and runs off, all it takes is for us to call him (sometimes twice) and he’ll come back. Our approval is more important to him than other things, which is great.

He is a gorgeous dog, absolutely gorgeous. We get so many compliments! Everyone wants to pet him. Good thing Archie doesn’t mind that.

Archie is also very, very intelligent. He is very easy to train and has learned many commands very quickly even when we were just training him at home without even knowing how to train a dog properly. We did a few weeks with a professional dog trainer too and he did amazing! We are planning to do more training with him in the future just to see how good he can become.

Our Golden is pretty easy to live with. He is a quiet dog, almost never barks, especially inside. When we are busy with something, he will go to his place where he has a comfy dog bed and lots of toys and just spend time there entertaining himself. He was a bit of a handful when he was a puppy though, but that passes quickly!

As with any dog, there are some downsides to owning a Golden Retriever. Doh hair is everywhere and we clean and vacuum daily! We could probably start making hats and socks from all the fur he sheds honestly! But that’s something you have to be ready for when you get a long-coat dog like a Golden Retriever.

Some Goldens have issues with allergies, but we haven’t actually had that issue with Archie, thankfully.

Golden Retrievers stay as puppies for a long time if not for their whole life. No matter how old they are, they always stay energetic, happy, outgoing, and always wanting to do something fun. They will bring lots of joy and happiness in your life, as long as you are ready for the responsibility that comes with owning a dog!
