Golden Retriever owner review: Lyssa and her Golden Retriever Bonnie

In my opinion, this breed is one of the best if you are looking for a dog that would be a perfect family pet and companion.

They are very intelligent. Golden Retrievers are the fourth most intelligent dog after border collies, poodles and German Shepherds. In comparison, Labrador Retrievers are the 7th smartest dog!

We got our Golden Retriever Bonnie from a local breeder.  She came with lots of paperwork: she has a pretty amazing pedigree, even though we never planned on showing her.

But we knew it’s important to get a dog from someone you can trust. We didn’t want any health problems or other genetic issues, and so far we are pretty happy with our dog.

By the time we picked up our puppy, she already had most of her necessary vaccination done.

Not only our Bonnie belongs to one of the smartest breeds out there,  she is also probably one of the smartest dogs within the breed. Or at least, that’s what we believe. She is very obedient, and not just because we went to obedience and puppy classes since she was very young. That’s just her personality.

We never actually take her to any competitions or dog shows. We never had any ambitions like that. We are definitely not interested in breeding either. We just wanted a family pet and we don’t care that she doesn’t have any awards (although we believe she could be very successful if we chose to actively participate in shows). Maybe we are a little too proud of her.

Golden Retrievers are very active and playful. Bonnie loves playing outside, especially in winter. She loves snow and snowbanks and could play in the snow for hours.

In the summer, Bonnie’s favorite thing is to be in the water! She can swim for hours and she’s actually very good at swimming!

Bonnie is quite a large dog. She weighs around 70 lbs which is slightly more than she should That’s because her appetite is so good and we don’t like to limit her too much. She doesn’t do that well with dry foods – she is allergic to pretty much all of them. So we try to feed her a more natural diet, which is mostly meat and some vegetables. Of course, we also give her regular treats, because it’s impossible not to.

To support the health of her teeth we also give her bones and other chew toys. It helps keep her teeth clean and keeps Bonnie busy when we can’t spend time entertaining her.

Goldens are very emotional dogs. You can literally see their thoughts and feelings on their faces. It’s like another human being in the body of a dog.

Of course, taking care of a dog can be quite involved and even difficult. For one, it’s constant cleaning and vacuuming, unless you are ok with literally drowning in dog hair. After every walk we have to wash her paws and tail, otherwise, she’ll track so much dirt inside, especially during winter and fall time. Washing your dog every time takes a lot of time!

Goldens aren’t necessarily the healthiest dogs out there, unfortunately. Allergies are not uncommon (as in Bonnie’s case). They can also have arthritis and hip issues which can be genetic. Cancer is not that uncommon either, especially in older dogs.

Another thing you should consider if you are thinking of adopting a Golden is your finances and whether you’ll be able to afford to properly care for your dog. The expenses involved are not that small. Food costs a lot, as do vitamins and minerals and medications if your dog needs them. Supplies such as leashes, collars, dog shampoo, toys, and clothes – all of that also costs a pretty penny. Grooming (if you groom your dog professionally) is quite expensive as well. And that’s without even taking into account vet bills if your dog needs any special vet care, which it likely will at least a few times over the course of your dog’s life.

Overall, our Golden Retriever is an irreplaceable member of our family. We love her dearly and can’t imagine our life without her. She gives us so much love and joy on a daily basis. Time spent with her is always well spent and I really can’t imagine that one day she won’t be with us. While she still is, we try to live every moment fully and give her as much love as she gives us.
