Golden Retriever owner review: Rita and her Golden Retriever, Nella
I adopted Nella almost nine years ago now! And so happy that I did it. I spent lots of time pondering if I was ready to get a dog of my own. (We had always had dogs in my parents’ home, but it’s not quite the same to have your own dog!) I kept watching shows about dogs and even bought some books until I felt that I was ready. Golden Retriever was an easy choice – is there really a better breed than Golden Reteirvers? Long story short, we got Nella as a little pup, and she is almost nine now.
She is of average size for a Golden and has lots and lots of hair. This is honestly one of the biggest downsides that I see to owning a Golden. All that hair! We literally clean every day, otherwise everything would drown in dog hair. The internet will tell you they have shedding seasons (spring and fall?) but in reality, she sheds all year round! But oh well, it just means we have to clean more than we usually would.
Nella is a very well-behaved, polite dog, although I can’t say I have trained her to be that way. It’s more like she learned it herself. She is a very gentle soul and always wants to please us, so she does everything to make us happy. She never steals anything from the table even though I can see she really wants to. She eats and sleeps where she is supposed to and if you tell her to leave you alone for a bit when you are busy, she will give you a sad look and go lie on her bed until you call her.
Nella doesn’t have too much of a doggy smell, which I love! Of course, cleaning her teeth really helps avoid the smell too. And bathing! She loves bathing, and we love to keep her clean and smelling nice. We have taught her to bathe since she was a little pup, so she doesn’t mind it at all now.
Nella is very friendly, probably the friendliest dog in the world. She loves it when we have guests and won’t leave them alone (unless we tell her to.) She will bring out all her toys to show to our guests – it’s hilarious! She is also good with other dogs and pets. She has zero aggression towards people or animals, which makes her a great dog to take anywhere without a leash. (Of course, we make sure she stays safe and far away from roads, etc). I really love the golden Retriever temperament, they are very “easy”, “convenient” dogs to live with. At least our Nella is. Although we often walk her without a leash, she has never run away and always comes back when I call her. She does need lots of active time: walking, playing in the park, running. I don’t think a Golden Retriever would be a good dog for a lazy person.
Feeding is easy. She doesn’t have any allergies (or any health issues at all really) and we feed premium foods from pet store. She’s been pretty happy with that and we haven’t had any issues. Her teeth are healthy, as is her coat.
Of course, as with any dog, there are downsides to owning a Golden Retriever. She needs to be walked, taken care of when she is sick, entertained, etc etc. But all of it is worth it if you love your dog., We can’t imagine our lives without Nella so it’s all very worth it for us.
