Golden Retriever breed review by Oxana and her Golden Charlie

This is the most intelligent dog I have ever met. Charlie is very easy to train, she learns everything on the fly and generally is pretty motivated to do what we ask her to do. She is also very agreeable, especially with us, her family. She will easily let me take her toys, even the one she is playing with at the moment, and will just wait patiently for me to return it. She hardly ever barks even when she is around other barking dogs, but she does make many other sounds. She will yelp and growl and make other sounds when we make her do something she doesn’t want to do (like take a bath!)

If you are about to adopt a Golden Retriever, you need to be ready to spend a lot of time with your dog. They need lots of mental and physical stimulation and exercise. They are very smart, talented dogs, but that comes with a downside! You will need to invest time into them!

This review is about Charlie, our soft Golden Cloud of a dog. No other breed can have such wise, intelligent eyes and such understanding of humans as Golden Retrievers, I am convinced!

Golden Retriever breeders in Oklahoma: Enchanted Goldens

Goldens are extremely sociable, affectionate and human-oriented dogs. Charlie loves everyone, especially us, her family. (Although she only really listens to my husband and sometimes me, if she wants to.) She will follow us everywhere in the house and outside as we garden. No trip goes without her! She doesn’t do well when she is away from us.

That may be one downside of owning a Golden Retriever, they are susceptible to separation anxiety! Charlie is not too bad and can actually spend a good part of the day on her own busy with her toys and kongs, but we have heard of many who can’t and either have to be crated or their owners have to literally take them everywhere. I couldn’t possibly take Charlie to my office so we are lucky this way.

We adopted our Golden from a rescue, so we didn’t raise her from “childhood”. She has a few issues that we are still working on, such as socialization. She is afraid and distrustful with other large dogs, and gets overly excited about people. Both can be a bit of a pain in the butt. For example, she gets so excited whenever someone comes to visit us that she can even pee a little. It’s gotten better now that she is older, but it can still be an issue. In terms of her anxiety around other dogs, we try to approach it gently and slowly socialize her more with some of our friends’ dogs so that she gets used to the idea. But we understand that this may or may not be fixable.

And it’s not just walking and exercising and playing in the park. It’s also the mundane everyday maintenance things like washing and brushing your dog and vacuuming layers of dog hair off the floor! There’s more of that in the winter when the weather is bad and there is more dirt and water for your pup to track in. But even in the summer! Goldens have long coats that require grooming if you want your dog to look respectable and your family to not drown in dog hair.

Proper feeding is also very important, and with Golden Retrievers this might mean you might need to watch out for allergies as Goldens are very prone to those. We feed a mix of store-bought dog food (wet food) and meat which seems to cover all her nutritional needs quite nicely. She is healthy, energetic and has a shiny, gorgeous coat. We used to have some tummy issues when she was younger, but they seem to have settled with time and once we found a good dog food brand that agreed with her.

That may be one downside of owning a Golden Retriever

One wonderful thing about Charlie (apart from all the other wonderful things!) is that she has no doggy odor (at least we think so!). But maybe that’s due to all the grooming that we do 🙂

Despite her socialization issues, she has a very stable, calm personality. She is not easily scared or disturbed and is usually very calm and well-behaved. In fact, we are quite proud of her in public places and she is a joy to be around when we are out and about.

Goldens are fantastic dogs, even though Charlie may have made us a bit biased. I would definitely recommend a Golden Retriever if you are thinking of getting a dog.
