Golden Retriever Owner Review: Janine and her Golden Sammy
Overall, Golden Retrievers are amazing dogs and they are the most popular breed out there for a reason! You will not be disappointed by your Golden Retriever, provided you do all the research and prepare beforehand and be ready for what the puppy may bring into your life.
Our Golden Sammy is a wonderful dog. We have never regretted getting a Golden, even when he was a crazy puppy (and Goldens are crazy in their puppy age!) I have researched many breeds. I always wanted a medium-sized dog that would be a companion: smart, affectionate, devoted. I found all this and more in our Sammy. He is not just a companion, he is like a therapy dog for me, the one I didn’t even know I needed! I know now why they are so popular all over the world.
Before I even start this review, I would like to say that you should only get your Golden from a trustworthy Golden Retriever breeder. Do your research and find a breeder that does all the health tests and only breeds from very good genetic lines if you want to avoid some major possible health issues in your dog. A puppy from a breeder like that will cost you quite a bit but your peace of mind and the health of your dog are worth it.
We have some friends who got their puppies from less than trustworthy breeders and they are mostly OK but I plead with you not to risk like that. The other thing, apart from health, is your dog’s psychological health. Good, calm temperament and personality are as much genetic as many other things in your dog. Of course, it also matters how you raise and train your dog.

Golden Retrievers are quite large (ours is almost 60 cm tall and weighs almost 6- lbs). But it doesn’t seem like he takes up too much space in the house. He is always attuned to whatever we are doing and he knows when he is in the way. I would say he is a very “convenient” dog to own in that sense.
In terms of personality, our Golden is extremely affectionate and loving. He is very polite with everyone and is very people-oriented. Love and praise from the owner is the best gift for a Golden Retriever, something that they cherish and value and are very willing to work for.
Of course, you don’t automatically get those qualities in a dog when you bring a puppy home. All of those qualities are learned and developed with time, and only if you are ready to put in the time and work in your dog. Training is extremely important, as is encouraging your Golden to behave well and discouraging undesirable behavior. With Goldens, any training you do should be based on positive reinforcement – that’s what they best respond to.
Some of the things to mind if you decide to get a Golden Retriever.
While you are reading this post, I just wanted to say you might also like these other articles:
They are very sensitive and very intelligent. They understand you – both your words and your facial expressions as well as the tone of your voice. You never need to yell at your dog. You should never yell at them because that may negatively affect their personality.
If you don’t want your Golden to sleep in your bed with you, teach them to sleep in their own bed from a very young age – preferably from the first days of the puppy’s life in your house. If you let them sleep with you even for a little while, it will be very hard to teach them not to.
The other thing you should teach your Golden Retriever from a young age is not to put his front paws on anyone. This is important if you want your dog to be polite and not jump on people (including you).
Socialization is very important, even for such a social breed as Golden Retriever. Take your puppy with you everywhere – to the park, to shops (wherever dogs are allowed), in the car, on the bus, on the plane, etc. The earlier you get them acquainted with various aspects of their environment, the better adjusted they will be.
The same goes for other people and dogs. If you want your dog to be easygoing and friendly towards other people and dogs, expose your pup to other dogs and their owners from an early age. Lots of walks, lots of time in the park among other dogs – all of that will ensure that you will raise a happy, well-adjusted canine citizen.

Hope they bring you lots of joy and happiness!
