A wonderful family dog. Happy, outgoing, high endurance, very smart. Downsides: can cost quite a bit if you take really good care of your dog.

Golden Retrievers are truly golden! I have always dreamt of owning a dog but I wasn’t sure about the breed for a while. I needed a companion, a friend. I wanted a dog that wouldn’t be too small or too big, that would be beautiful and smart. It would need to be a perfect dog for me and my family.

By all these criteria, Golden Retrievers seemed like a perfect breed (apart from their long coat which I sort of wanted to avoid).

Golden Retrievers are considered some of the best companion dogs in the world. They are happy and outgoing, but also very trusting so they wouldn’t make good guard dogs. You should never try to raise a Golden into a guard dog. That would go completely against their very nature. This dog is a friend and companion, not a guard dog.

These dogs have traditionally been used as hunting dogs. They are very good at fetching game, including fetching game from water. These days they are also often used as Search and Rescue dogs.

This is an extremely popular breed all over the world. They are fairly large dogs (can reach up to 60 cm tall and up to 60 lbs in weight). They have friendly facial expressions, long ears and dark noses.

Golden Retrievers are very friendly and very intelligent. This dog is highly people-oriented. Spending time with their owner is probably the best thing imaginable for a Golden.

However, you shouldn’t think that you are just going to get that the moment you bring your puppy home. You will need to raise that puppy correctly for them to become that ideal dog.

If you decide to invest time into training your Golden (which you should), clicker-training works best.  This is the type of training that is based on positive reinforcement instead of punishment. And, of course, it’s important to get a puppy from a respectable, trustworthy breeder if you want a puppy with the best possible genetic makeup. Buying a puppy from a good breeder can help ensure that your dog will not have any genetic diseases and bad temperament, both of which can make your life with your dog much harder.

Our Golden Retriever Jenna is from a very good breeder in our area. She is a wonderful dog. She is intelligent, kind and funny.  She was easy to toilet train and overall a fairly “easy” puppies (although puppies can be quite a handful).

Like all Golden Retrievers, Jenna is a very family-oriented dog. She likes to do everything with us. Whether we are cooking, gardening, decorating a Christmas tree – she is right there with us. She loves playing with kids do. She’ll fetch a ball or play tug-of-war. She knows many commands too. She is very good at learning new commands and we are planning on taking part in some competitions later.

Some of the downsides to owning this breed might include dog hair – lots and lots of it. If you don’t like constantly finding dog hair in your food and bed – this might not be a good breed for you. No matter how much you vacuum!

The other potential downside is that it can be quite costly to properly care for this dog, but that can really apply to any dog. Good food can be costly, especially if your dog has any allergies (which Goldens often do). Vet bills are even more costly. Dog toys, crates, leashes, and other supplies, it all adds up. You will also need to figure out who to leave your dog with when you go on a vacation. All these things are something you need to take into account if you are seriously considering getting this dog.
