Here are some of the great things about owning a Labrador Retriever.

This is a happy, outgoing, fun breed to have. They are very good with children. Toby is very chill even when kids pull at his hair or step on his paw or even try to ride him. It’s almost like he understands that he’s dealing with a small, vulnerable, silly little human.

Patience. Labs are extremely patient, at least Toby is. He easily lets us clean his ears, trim his nails, etc, even though I know he doesn’t like it. Even our vet says he is one of the most patient dogs he’s ever treated.

Good mood! Toby is always in a good mood. It just seems to be this thing about Labrador Retrievers, their natural ability to be always happy and excited. Sometimes it kind of gets on your nerves to be honest. Even when we have to punish Toby, he doesn’t stay upset for any real length of time and bounces right back into his cheerful excited self.

Never spoils anything. Of course, when Toby was little, he chewed up half of our house and our clothes. But now that he has grown out of this puppy age, he hardly ever spoils anything in the house He knows very well what he can and cannot chew. We can even leave books and newspapers around which he would destroy when he was a small pup, but now he just leaves them alone.

Low to no barking. Toby only barks when there is a reason for it or on command. When he does bark, it sounds like he is a bigger and more aggressive dog than he actually is. But he never ever barks without a reason and is generally pretty silent which I really like about him.

Some downsides

Toby is quite a scaredy-cat when it comes to any medical procedures that actually hurt. When we need to give him an injection at the vet, he becomes three times heavier and you literally cannot lift him off the floor to put him on the vet’s table. If he doesn’t want to take a pill, you can’t make him. He’s just very, very stubborn.

He’s very stubborn. If he wants something, he will get it, or die trying. Maybe we spoiled him, but he just seems to think he can have everything he wants. If you ignore him, he will start breathing really loud, then whining,  and he won’t take his eyes off of you for hours and hours.

Dirt, sand and dog hair in your house. If you are not ready to deal with it on a daily basis for the rest of your dog’s life, do not get a dog. Labs have short coats but don’t let that deceive you. They shed plenty. They shed lots! You’ll constantly have a carpet of dog hair all over your floors and furniture. For someone who is a dog lover, this is all tolerable of course, but you have been warned.

Voracious appetite. Toby will eat anything in sight and more. Everything in the house, any bits of food that we accidentally leave on top of a counter – everything will be picked up. The same goes for anything edible and non-edible that he can find outside (including other dogs’ poop!). He’ll just vacuum it all up! This gets annoying very quickly and is an ongoing thing we have to watch all the time.

He steals things. Since Toby has grown out of his puppy age, he hasn’t been chewing up any of our things. But he does steal them and puts them in his hidey places, for what reason – only he knows. Remote control from the TV, socks, other small items – everything of value needs to be put away or Toby will put it away.

Doesn’t like to play on his own. This is a bit of an issue because we need to always come up for ways to entertain him and keep him entertained. You can’t just give him a toy and expect him to occupy himself. If no one is playing with him, he will just follow us wherever we go and sulk. Thankfully he also sleeps a whole lot, so sometimes he’ll just go and take a nap if he’s bored.
