Labrador Retriever Breeders Florida: Labrador Owner Review

Labradors are wonderful dogs but like with everything, there are two sides of the medal. There are definitely some downsides to owning one as well as many many upsides. Some people may find the downsides quite critical so I thought I would try to write a more or less objective review, at least as objective as I can be.

I would say labradors are excellent dogs for people with milder, more patient personalities, who don’t get irritated easily. But if you are a more impatient person, you may not enjoy owning a Labrador that much.

One of the more positive sides of Labrador Retrievers is how friendly and outgoing they are. They are even very good with children, although it’s always good to teach your dog to be patient around kids. We trained our Leo from a very young age to be nice to our kid so he is very good now.

He also is never aggressive to other people or dogs. Yes, his patience is not infinite and he will stand his ground if another dog is being aggressive towards him but other than that he is the sweetest pup around.

Leo, like other Labradors, is also extremely smart. But hides it very well sometimes 🙂

Labs really like water! It’s hilarious and very entertaining to watch him around the water. We have many rivers around and at first, we were very worried because of the strong currents but he turned out to be a master swimmer. He loves being in the water and will find it everywhere. Nowadays we often take him to the beach and throw sticks and toys in the water for him to retrieve. Speaking of which, he loves sticks and is constantly bringing at least one home from our walks. We have to confiscate them secretly because we already have a yard full of them.

Some of the downsides of owning a Labrador Retriever (as seen by me)

Yes, they are very loving and affectionate. The downside of that is that they really really need their people around all the time and can become quite attached/clingy. When we don’t have time for him, Leo follows us everywhere and whines. While some people may be OK with that, I don’t really enjoy such behavior. I like it when a dog can occupy themselves for at least a few hours, as I really don’t need another child! Oh well. We love Leo anyway, and we always have a lot of toys and chew toys to offer him when we really need him to leave us alone for a bit.

Another downside is that he is a chewing machine. He will chew up and ruin anything that’s not hidden, so we learned very fast to put all valuables and even just clothes and shoes away. He is also ruthless when it comes to our garden. We did lose quite a few plants to his antiques. We’ve just basically learned to be OK with that.

Labradors have a voracious appetite! This includes actual foods as well as various inedibles such as other dogs poop! Sorry! But it’s the truth. The number of times we had to pry his mouth open to prevent him from swallowing stuff we really, really don’t want him to swallow! Some people say it’s because the dog lacks some nutrients in their diet. But we are very thorough with his nutrition and feed him premium brand food. Honestly, I think that’s just life with a Lab. It involves constantly watching what they are trying to pick off the ground and gobble up.

Healthwise, Labrador Retrievers are prone to being overweight and can also have many allergies. Leo is allergic to chicken and any grains. It was a bit tricky to find a food that agreed with him and didn’t contain any of his allergens.

Leo doesn’t do very well in hot weather. He is also a shedding machine – shedding just never stops. He isn’t a very clean dog, does have a doggy smell and constantly brings lots of dirt and dust to our home. That’s not counting the dog hair!

He also farts a lot.

Do you still want to adopt a Lab?

He is stubborn and overly confident, and very sneaky. He will try to steal anything we leave on the countertop or table. If he wants to get into something, no amount of “NO!” and “DON’T DO IT” will help. He will get into it anyway the moment you turn away.

All in all, Labradors are not as easy to live with as they may seem. They are fantastic family pets, very loving and affectionate. But as with any breed, it’s best to know the upsides and downsides ahead of time so that you are not disappointed when you finally adopt your puppy.
