Golden Retriever owner review ( Pete and his Golden Retriever Joe)

Our Golden Retriever Joe is truly a member of our family, and we love him so much. Some people mix him up with a more popular breed – Labrador Retriever. We even had people tell me he is actually a very hairy Labrador! But they are not at all the same breed.

I have always wanted to get a dog, ever since I was a child. But my parents were always against it. So, once I got married and we began living separately from my parents, we decided we would get a dog almost immediately. My husband wanted a German Shepherd, and at first, I thought that was a good idea too. But then one day, I saw a video about Golden Retrievers, and I fell in love.

I began trying to convince my husband to get a Golden Retriever instead and he finally agreed. It took us a while to find a good breeder, and once we did, we had to wait for a few months until they actually had a puppy. Finally, months later, we were able to bring our little Joe home!

We created a nice spot for him before we even brought him home: a place for his dog bed, his toys, chew toys and such. At first, he missed his former home and his family. He was also very afraid to go outside. We had to actually carry him every time.

However, we were able to potty train him very quickly and easily. Of course, there were a few accidents here and there, but he understood pretty quickly what exactly it was that we expected from him. Thankfully, when we just got Joe, I didn’t work full-time and had a lot of time available to spend with him.

I could take him out 4-5 times a day as a puppy, which undoubtedly made it easier for Joe to learn to potty outside. If you can’t do that, your experience with potty training may be quite different.

One difficulty we encountered when Joe was young is that he didn’t really want to spend too much time at the spot we prepared for him. Maybe he didn’t like it there too much, or maybe he felt isolated from us. Perhaps he is just very free-spirited and likes to be whenever he wants to be.

We were pretty allowing and open-minded and didn’t mind his getting on the sofa or couch or anywhere else really. But if you are the type of person who doesn’t like it when their dog gets onto the sofa (or in your bed), you do need to be very strict with them when they are puppies and hold your grounds.

The puppy needs to know very early on what is allowed and what isn’t before they learn bad habits. Right now Joe loves sleeping in one of our armchairs and naps on the sofa too sometimes.

Here are some of the best qualities of Golden Retrievers. First of all, it’s kindness and friendliness. These dogs are considered some of the best family pets and companions. They are very good with kids and are often used as service and therapy dogs. They are excellent hunting companions too, which is actually what they were originally bred for.

Golden Retriever Breeders Missouri: owner review

Goldens are very easy to train for. They are very happy to please their owners so they are eager to do whatever you ask them to (usually). Joe knows all the basic commands as well as knows how to open doors, wait at the crossroads (he will never cross the road on his own), can fetch and find objects, etc. Training is very important for your Golden general development and to keep them busy and excited.

For me personally, Golden Retrievers are perfect dogs, both in terms of their physical characteristics and their temperament. Of course, there are some downsides to owning a Golden. Here are some of the things that may make it less than an ideal dog for you.

Golden Retrievers are not good guard dogs. If you are looking for a big dog to guard your farm or homestead, a Golden will not help you. They may “lick” the trespasser to death, but that’s probably the extent of it. Our Joe still barks at strangers when they enter the house, but it’s all just bark and definitely no bite. (Which is fine with us!)

Long hair and lots of hair. If you don’t like having lots of dog hair around your house or apartment, you may do better with a Labrador Retriever. They shed just like Goldens, but at least their coats are much shorter.

Health. Golden Retrievers can suffer from Hip Dysplasia, weight gain and a weak stomach, as well as allergies and some other health issues. It is important to only buy/adopt Goldens from respectable, trustworthy breeders so that you can be sure that there are only healthy dogs in their pedigree.

For me personally, all of the issues above are not enough to detract me from how much I love this breed. I am very happy to be the owner of this wonderful dog for three years already and I am hoping for many, many more years ahead with him.
