Labrador Owner review: Teena and her Labrador Ada
Ada has a very calm personality and isn’t easily intimidated, but she is afraid of loud noises and especially fireworks. Christmas time is a particularly tricky time for her. She is also afraid of thunderstorms and cannot be left alone during a thunderstorm, or she’ll panic and chew on things and furniture. She usually doesn’t chew on anything other than her toys, but when she is scared, she will revert to her bad habits and can get very destructive. If we know a thunderstorm is coming, we will stay with her and keep her company. We have to literally sit with her and hug her sometimes, to calm her panic attacks during thunderstorms.
Our Labrador Retriever Ada is now almost 4 years old. She is a pretty perfect dog for our family. Although, when she was a puppy, she was a bit of a nightmare. She almost chewed us out of our house: she chewed everything, from our shoes to the curtains. And, of course, she had so much energy that ew always had to help her expand. We’d take her out ten times a day (which actually was good for potty training too).
These days she is much, much calmer and doesn’t chew anything except her chew toys (she does go through those quite quickly.). We still have to take her for long, quality walks so that she doesn’t get bored and destructive. She is a very calm, polite dog outside, we have never had any issues with aggression or bad behavior. She used to pull her leash when she was a “kid”, but now she knows how to behave. She is very friendly to other people, even strangers, and always wants to be petted and paid attention to, which she gets in spades.

Our Ada is wonderful with children. Both of our kids are very active, and Ada like a third kid for us, she always keeps our kids company and is always up to whatever mischief they are into. Our daughter has a special rapport with Ada. We took Ada to puppy classes when she was still young and our Daughter spent lots of time training Ada, working with her on the things they learned in class and some additional commands and tricks. I think because of that Ada formed this special connection with Jenny, and she still loves Jenny the most out of our whole family. She waits for Jenny to come from school in her bedroom, and will sit at the bathroom door when our daughter is in the shower, and will generally follow her around. It’s very touching to see that special connection between them.
Like all Labrador Retrievers, Ada adores swimming. She loves lakes and rivers, and she even loves our bathtub although she can’t really swim in it of course.
Another thing we like about Ada is that she only has a minimal doggy smell, not at all like some dogs we know. Maybe it’s because of her shorter coat, or maybe it’s because she likes taking baths so she gets a lot of them.
We do have to brush her coat out even though it’s quite short. She sheds quite a lot throughout the year, and even though her coat is shorter, her hair is still everywhere around the house. If you prefer your house to be very clean, getting a dog might not be a great idea!
When Ada was still a puppy, we got her a crate and would crate her every time we had to leave her home alone. Otherwise, she would be anxious and scared and could chew on things we didn’t want her to chew on, or even accidentally hurt herself. We don’t have to crate her anymore, but she loves her crate and will go in there on her own sometimes, especially when we leave.
Labradors are very people-oriented. Ada lives for her family (us!). Even on walks, when we meet other people or dogs, she doesn’t get distracted that easily and will still keep us in her field of vision, because we matter the most. We love that about her. We love a lot of things about her, really. She is a cherished member of our family and we can’t imagine our life without her.
