Labrador Breeders in Texas: Labrador owner breed review (Natasha and her lab Millie)

If you are planning to adopt a Labrador Retriever, it’s important to remember that they are not just cute fluffy puppies forever but a breed with its own idiosyncrasies and potential issues. Although, of course, mostly they are adorable and you will love yours to bits.

But first things first. I have kind of always wanted to have a dog. I was considering a Labrador Retriever in particular for about 6 months or so. By then my partner and I already had our own place and he wasn’t opposed to the idea either. I didn’t really consider any other breeds. A yellow Lab was the dog I always imagined. My partner wanted a different color for a while – he liked chocolate labs more. But eventually we “compromised” on the yellow coat color anyway! It took us a while to find a good breeder that we could trust because we both knew how important it is. Apart from that, we both realized how much responsibility a dog is so we needed time to prepare financially, as well as prepare our home for a new puppy.

We eventually found a breeder about 150 miles away from our town but the drive was definitely worth it. When we saw the puppies, we fell totally in love with them. Especially with our Millie. A few weeks later, we were able to take her home with us! (And yes, it was another drive there and back.) The fun began!

Right from the beginning, we tried to spend as much time with Millie as we could, involving her in everything. We took her for plenty of walks and she started to learn to follow us and listen to us (a bit!). She even started to develop a recall fairly quickly. And learned a few commands.

Overall, I think Millie’s “childhood” with us was very nice. She always had our company and tons of toys. There were never enough toys, because she kept chewing through all of them! Her favorite toy of all times is actually a plastic bottle that she keeps carrying around with her wherever she goes.

Millie is now six months old and although she is still considered a puppy (honestly I think she will always be a puppy), her personality is starting to change. Ironically, she seemed more stable and “chilled” when she was younger. Now all of a sudden she is expressing much more interest in other dogs and people and often doesn’t listen to us and our commands. She’ll just do what she wants and we really try to work more on her behavior so hopefully, it’s just a matter of time.

Of course, there has been quite a bit of chewing and “redecorating” in our house, done by Millie and absolutely at no charge! Thankfully our house is older and we don’t have new furniture and such. But even with older furniture, it wasn’t all that great when Millie chewed up a side of our armchair and a table leg and pretty much destroyed our bedroom curtains one day when we left her home alone for too long.

For a while, we really didn’t know what to expect every time we came home from work. Crating helps but I really don’t want to create her for longer than just a few hours and definitely not for the whole day when we are at work. We really just hope she’ll outgrow all of this.

Of course, despite all of this, we still love her to bits.

Millie loves taking trips with us and especially she loves riding in cars. She is a happy, positive, outgoing pup and is never aggressive to anyone. But she can also be a little needy and too much with her “loving”.  We hope she becomes more chill as she ages but right now she is very enthusiastic about everything and especially about us, her family.

A few things to remember if you are still thinking about adopting a dog:

Will you have someone to leave your dog with when you need to go out of town? Or even on vacation!

If you want your dog to be able to protect you, remember that Labrador Retriever really wouldn’t be the best choice for that. They are just too friendly and outgoing for any sort of protection.

A dog is a lot of responsibility. Once the first excitement of having a puppy fizzles out, will you still be happy to take care and spend lots of hours with your dog and tending to lots of their needs? Speaking of which, do you have a budget to spend if your dog needs vet help?

Are you ready to take your Labrador for a walk at least twice a day every day? In any weather?

If you enjoy your house clean and in full order, are you ready for the fact that your Lab may very well destroy some of your furniture and you will have a layer of dog hair everywhere, on every surface, at all times?

Are you ready to spend a good price on a purebred Labrador that will be healthy and responsibly bred as opposed to a puppy from a puppy mill, even though the latter will be cheaper?

All of these are things that you should think hard about before actually making a decision of bringing a puppy to your house.
