Labrador Retriever Owner review – Alex and her Labrador Torin

But owning a Lab is not all bad 🙂 Torin is the most affectionate, loving and fun dog to have around. He is very energetic, always up for an adventure and brings lots of joy into our lives. He is also fantastic with kids – both our kids and other kids we meet in the park or on the street. He is very gentle and seems to not only tolerate it when kids show him too much attention but actually enjoy it.

Overall, our Labrador Torin is a wonderful dog, and we would recommend a Lab to other people, provided they research the breed thoroughly and are ready for some difficulties. This breed is not absolutely ideal but close to it!

My husband and I always wanted to have a dog but for some reason decided to have kids instead of for the first ten years of our marriage 🙂 When the kids grew up a bit, we felt that it was finally time to go after our dream. Besides, now that we had kids, we could pretend we are getting a dog for them! (Of course!)

Labrador Retriever Owner review - Alex and her Labrador Torin

After a lot of research, we decided a Labrador Retriever would probably be an ideal breed for us. All the reviews seem to talk about them as the ideal family companion, a first go-to for families with kids and a great dog in general. So it didn’t take us all that long to agree on this breed. After that, we spent several months looking for a good breeder, because we both knew how important it was to only work with trustworthy breeders. After about five months of searching and then waiting for our puppy to grow up a bit, we were able to bring Torin home.

He was a gorgeous fluffy puppy, but honestly also a bit (a lot!) destructive and a force to be reckoned with. He behaved as if he has always lived in our home from the literally first day here. He ran around, sniffing everything out, exploring, wagging his tail like the happiest little camper. He was far more confident than the two of us were dealing with him! Of course, our kids were ecstatic to meet him and he was just as excited to meet them. They are pretty much equals in the sense of their destructive force and energy! Maybe that’s why they loved each other from first sight.

Did I mention the word “destructive”? Torin would knock off vases, books (hello, new chew toy!), steal food leftovers, etc. For those first few months of life in our house, he would bring literal destruction anywhere he could get into. This is why we tried really hard to supervise him everywhere, just like we did with our kids. Maybe even more!

Labrador Retriever would probably be an ideal breed for us

Torin’s self-confident and stubborn character started showing itself very early on. I still think Labs are awesome dogs, but be warned, some of them have perhaps less than ideal personalities. We love Torin to bits, he is our third child and sometimes even our favorite one! Still, don’t buy it when people say Labs are all-around ideal and won’t give you any trouble. Maybe most of them are but there are definitely some outliers like our Torin.

He is very strong-willed and stubborn, and also quite dominant. From the first days in our house, he decided he could just take our kids’ toys even when they wouldn’t let him. He was the same size as them and definitely stronger than both of our kids taken together, so it was an unequal fight!

We do our best to intervene, still, but he just seems to have this stubborn streak where he thinks everything he sees belongs to him, and gets very surprised when we try to tell him otherwise. For a while, we considered involving a professional dog trainer to try and work with this temperament of his, and we are still considering it. Torin is a great dog most of the time, but a lot of times he just wouldn’t listen, even my husband would have a hard time getting him to do something we need him to do. (Or not do!).

There are some other cons of owning a Lab. For us, it’s the endless dog hair everywhere. We have carpets and it’s really hard to get dog hair out of the carpet no matter how much you vacuum (and we vacuum every day).

Torin also has quite a strong doggy odor, unfortunately. Don’t get a Lab if you are sensitive to smells. It doesn’t matter how many times we clean him or what shampoo we use on him when we bathe him. He’s still a little stinker 🙂

Being a destructive force that he is (and he is!) Torin keeps methodically destroying things that don’t belong to him, such as our kids; toys, our headphones, books that we leave unattended on the coffee table (never again) and such. When he was little, he would also chew our shoes if we forgot to put them away. Thankfully this seemed to have stopped around his 6 months or so. Thankfully, because our kids keep forgetting to put their shoes away and kids shoes are expensive!

He is also very emotionally attuned to us and seems to understand us very well. (Which doesn’t mean he’ll always do what we want of course). Whenever I’m sad or not in the mood, it’s as if my Labrador knows it. He will linger around and try to lean into me and lick my hands or even my face, which always makes me feel better despite how stinky he can be.

Overall, our Labrador Torin is a wonderful dog, and we would recommend a Lab to other people, provided they research the breed thoroughly and are ready for some difficulties. This breed is not absolutely ideal but close to it!
