Golden Retriever owner review: Elena and her Golden Rocky

My feeling about Golden Retrievers is that they are in this world to teach us, humans, to be happier, more positive and excited about life. They are like children and they teach us to be more like children, open to life’s experiences and happiness. But of course, like children, they come with lots of responsibility and issues that need to be worked on.

Goldens are like children, and they adore children. If you already have kids, you’ll probably really enjoy a Golden Retriever because you’ll find that having a Golden is very similar to having a child. They are curious, energetic, happy, loving and affectionate, but of course, can also be moody. And they definitely need a lot of your attention, time and care. If you don’t invest enough time in your dog and raise them properly and teach them how to behave, they will be crazy and rambunctious and will think they can do what they want. They have lots of energy and it needs to always be directed and contained, otherwise, they can turn into a bit of a nightmare.

I always wanted a bigger dog with a calm, affectionate personality, and would have probably gotten a Saint Bernard or something like that, but my good friend recommended a Golden Retriever because she used to have one when she was a kid. Goldens are quite large too and I’ve heard a lot about how affectionate they are, so, after a long discussion with my husband, we decided to adopt a Golden Retriever.

We never regretted our decision.

Rocky is the kindest, happiest dog I have ever met.  He is completely non-aggressive: as far as I know, aggression is considered a disqualifying quality for this breed. It is genetically bred out of them. He never gets snappy even when the kids get on his nerve which happens often!

Another thing we like about Rocky is that he doesn’t have that doggy odor that many other dogs do. He is a fairly clean dog, and if he gets into something smelly or dirty, he has no issue with us giving him a good thorough bath. We’ve been giving him baths since he was a small puppy and he enjoys them a lot. Even though our Golden has a pretty short coat, he still sheds a whole lot, so regular brushing and bathing help reduce the amount of dog hair that ends up in our carpet.

This isn’t a lap dog that you can just walk for ten minutes a day and then forget about. With their bursting energy, Goldens need at least two long walks a day, preferably active walks where you also play with them or let them run and lay with other dogs. If you don’t let the dog expend their energy, they will find a way to do it in your house which will not end well.

Another thing about Golden Retrievers is that they are very sociable dogs. They need the company of other dogs or people. If Rocky doesn’t get to play in the park with other dogs at least once a week (preferably twice), he gets frustrated, bored and it definitely reflects in his behavior. He becomes more mischievous in the house and can even start chewing things he isn’t supposed to, just because he is bored.

The other thing is if you want your dog to be polite and obedient, strict discipline doesn’t work that well with Goldens. They are very sensitive and people-oriented and don’t take well to force or raised voices. You will need to work not only on the dog but on yourself as well, learning to understand your pup and their needs, and what they are trying to tell you with their behavior. If you don’t have time or energy for all of that (or desire!), please don’t get a Golden Retriever. Perhaps an easier dog, something of a lap dog variety, would be better.

If you are very busy and spend long hours at work, a Golden Retriever may also be not the best dog for you. They don’t do well when they are left alone for long periods of time.

Overall, my feeling about Golden Retrievers is that they are in this world to teach us, humans, to be happier, more positive and excited about life. They are like children and they teach us to be more like children, open to life’s experiences and happiness. But of course, like children, they come with lots of responsibility and issues that need to be worked on. So you need to really be ready for a dog before you decide to bring a Golden Retriever into your home.
