Labrador Retriever owner review: Mariah and her Lab Phoebe

Phoebe met all my expectations from a dog and more! She is affectionate and has an unbelievable amount of energy even now that she is four years old. She is still a crazy puppy at heart!

Of course, as with any puppy, the first months were challenging to say the least. We had to potty train her, and crate train her, and teach her not to chew on furniture which was her favorite pastime.

On the good side, once the puppy days were over, we actually ended up having the most intelligent, smartest dog out there that hasn’t since about 7 months of age ruined a single pair of shoes or torn a single book or newspaper. The only things she chews on now are her own chew toys! Another great thing about Phoebe is that she is very clean and would never pick anything up off the ground to eat like many of my dogs used to. She also never rolls in anything outside – if you’ve ever owned dogs, you know it’s their favorite thing to do. Because of this, Phoebe is always clean and never stinks!

I have always loved dogs and we always had at least one dog in the house when I was growing up. Now I have my own house and my own children, and when they started asking if we could get a dog, I was mostly all for it. We just had to decide on the breed.

When I was a kid, we had all kinds of dogs including mixed breeds, and they were all very lovable and were completely worth it. But, as I grew older, I developed some preferences in terms of what breeds were more desirable to me (and my family). We didn’t want very small dogs because, although they are “convenient” and don’t take much space, they tend to be noisier in general (sorry if you love small breeds, no offense!). When I was a kid, we had a cane corso type dog at one point and it had a great personality, but I had small kids so I was a little worried about any guard breeds in the house. After a lot of thinking and discussions, we decided on a Labrador Retriever, because we had one when I was a kid and I know they are a great breed.

This is how we got Phoebe.

Our Labrador is also very gentle with kids, even with our youngest one who tends to be quite rough with her. She will even allow the kids near her food bowl without any growling.

Phoebe is also a joy to have and take outside. She doesn’t pull the leash (although she used to when she was younger) and is very polite with anyone she meets. She is also good in the car and it’s easy for us to take her on car trips, even long ones.

In terms of feeding, she will eat anything, but we do a mix of dog food and natural feeding, which mostly includes meat. One thing we are still working on with Phoebe is food begging. I think Labrador Retrievers in general are quite prone to gaining weight and Phoebe in particular is very food-oriented and will do anything for a treat. She also steals food off teh counters when she can reach it so we try to keep all food away from her.

One giant pro that I see in Phoebe is how quiet she is. She literally almost never barks. I don’t know if that’s breed-specific or if she just has a very stable personality. She never ever barks, even when a stranger is at the door or comes into the house. It was very good for us that she is so quiet, especially when our youngest kid was still a baby and I could trust Phoebe to be quiet during his naps and not to wake the baby up.

One downside we’ve encountered with our Labrador Retriever is her weak stomach. She is sick to her stomach quite often unfortunately so that’s another reason why we watch her diet carefully.

Another downside is all the dog hair. You’d think Labrador Retrievers wouldn’t shed so much seeing that their coats are pretty short. But they actually shed lots, and all-year-round!

I can’t think of any other downsides, to be honest. It’s hard to think of negatives when your dog is a member of your family and brings so much love and happiness into your life!
